Hank Aaron: A Consequential Figure in American History

The Hammer's Legacy

WEB Henry Louis Aaron (February 5, 1934 - January 22, 2021)

Hank Aaron, a son of the Deep South, rose above poverty and racism to become one of the most consequential figures in American history. Born in Mobile, Alabama, on February 5, 1934, he was nicknamed "Hammer" or "Hammerin' Hank" for his powerful swing at the plate.

Over the course of his 23-season Major League Baseball (MLB) career, Aaron surpassed batting records held by some of the greatest players in history. He broke Babe Ruth's all-time home run record in 1974, a feat that earned him national acclaim and cemented his place among baseball's legends.
